Drills for Beginners: Building a Strong Foundation
If you're new to padel, it's essential to start with the basics. These drills will help you develop the core skills you need to play confidently and start enjoying the game right away.
a) Basic Forehand and Backhand Drills
The forehand and backhand are the bread and butter of your padel game. Mastering these strokes will lay the foundation for all other shots.
- How to Do It: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Practice hitting forehand and backhand shots against the wall, focusing on consistency and form.

As you progress, try to increase your speed and precision by hitting the ball to specific targets on the wall. This will build your hand-eye coordination and stroke accuracy.
b) Footwork Drills
Good footwork is critical in padel, as you need to be able to move quickly and react to fast-paced shots. A solid footwork foundation allows you to position yourself correctly for every shot.
- How to Do It: Practice shuffle steps, crossover steps, and split steps. Start by moving back and forth along the baseline, focusing on quick, efficient movements. Then, move to lateral drills and practice covering the court’s width.

c) The "T-Position" Drill
The T-position is where you want to be after every shot in padel. This position allows you to cover the court effectively and be ready for your opponent’s next move.
- How to Do It: After each shot, quickly return to the T-position at the center of the court. You can practice this with a partner by hitting the ball back and forth, focusing on getting back to the center after every shot.
